What is a hot flush?
A hot flush is a sudden feeling of intense heat. This heat may just be felt in your face, neck and chest, or the sensation can spread over your entire body. The heat appears to come out of nowhere as it creeps up on you without any prior warning.
What are night sweats?
Night sweats are hot flushes that you have at night. The main issue at night is that you may not wake when the heat starts resulting in you waking up dripping in sweat with damp bed sheets clinging to you.
What causes them?
It is thought that low levels of oestrogen may confuse the hypothalamus, the part of your brain that regulates body temperature. When your brain thinks you are too warm it kicks off a chain of events in your body to cool you down, hence the sweating and racing heart that often accompany hot flushes.
Tips for managing hot flushes and night sweats
- Keep a diary to track any triggers
- Stay well hydrated
- Wear clothing that keeps you cool
- Modify your sleeping environment by using cotton bedding and keeping your room as cool as possible (the ideal temperature is 18 degrees)
- Look at taking a supplement to ensure you have all the required vitamins and nutrients
