Vaginal Dryness
Vaginal dryness, also known as vaginal atrophy, can be itchy, physically painful, embarrassing and can sometimes lead to infection. Vaginal dryness can also make sex extremely painful, so much so you refrain from having intercourse.
For more information on painful sex, view the painful sex symptom here.
Why does Menopause cause Vaginal Dryness?
Oestrogen plays an important role in the bodies natural lubrication production. During the menopause, oestrogen levels drop, which has a negative impact on the amount of natural lubrication produced. This results in the vagina becoming dry and its tissues becoming fragile and sensitive.
Tips for managing vaginal dryness
Have sex!
Having sex on a regular basis can help vaginal dryness, as when a woman becomes aroused the blood flow to the vaginal tissues increases. This in turn helps to stimulate the production of natural lubrication. This is achieved whether you have sex with a partner or on your own. Foreplay is extremely important, ensuring that you are aroused, as well as using lubrication.
Lubricate and Moisturise
If enough lubrication is not being naturally produced by a woman’s body, then water based intimate lubricants can ease the dryness and relieve the discomfort, especially during sex.
Using a vaginal moisturiser on a regular basis can help to rehydrate sensitive tissues.
When choosing a product, opt for one that will balance your natural pH levels.
Wear Cotton Underwear
Certain materials can make vaginal irritation worse. Where possible opt to wear cotton underwear as this allows the vagina to breathe which will help relieve itchiness.
Use a Topical Oestrogen
These are available in vaginal rings, pessaries and creams.
